The Q&A Archives: Did I Cause My Weeds In My Lawn?

Question: I think that I am the cause of my weed problems. I really like a short lawn that looks well trimmed. Is that good for the lawn, or does that hurt it?

Answer: Experts recommend mowing at the heightest recommended height for your variety of grass. It is also advised to remove no more than one-third of the blade at each mowing. Removing more stresses the plant as it loses tissue for photosynthesis and inhibits root growth. Also, maintaining a dense, thick cover reduces many weed problems.
