| We have a large deck that gets a small amount of sun in the mornings the rest of the day is all shade there, I have been wanting to plant some shade loving "non flowering" plants into "hanging pots" to be placed under my deck. I recently purchased some very small hostas, I would love to have them hanging from under our deck, my concern is can they thrive in a planter? And what should I do when with them when the winter season approaches, we live in the St. Louis Missouri area and the winters can get pretty cold. |
| Hostas are good candidates for container growing, so your idea should work just fine as long as you can keep them well watered during the heat of the summer. You will need to protect their roots from freezing over the winter, however. You can do this best by planting them in the ground in the fall, then dig them up and repot them in the spring. This also provides an opportunity to renew the soil in the baskets and to divide the plants if they have overgrown their containers. |
