| A general guideline is to determine your first frost date and then subtract the days to maturity for whatever plant you want to grow. Days to maturity info is in catalog descriptions or on seed packets. If time is a factor, try to choose varieties that mature in as few days as possible. These often have 'Early' in their name, such as Early Girl tomato which matures in 59 days. If you buy transplants from a nursery, ask them, or assume about 70 days. Minneapolis' first frost date averages October 13. You can usually get your area's frost date from a local weather station. Also, if things remain wet, you can try planting a couple tomatoes in large containers, just for insurance! |
