The Q&A Archives: Pruning Heathers

Question: I live in Southwestern Pa. just south of Pittsburgh. I have heather bushes that appear to be dead. However, recently I've noticed some new growth. Should I just let it go, or should I try to cut back the old part of the plant that appears dead?

Answer: Let it go. By the middle of summer you will definitely know what is really dead and what only appears to be dead. Then you can cut out the really dead stuff (very carefully, of course, to avoid cutting out the living stuff).
