We have a river birch tree that has some
dead leaves, and some that appear to have
been partially eaten. The nursery we deal
with thought it might be leafminer or aphids
that are doing the damage and gave us liquid
Sevin to spray on the tree. Please advise if
this is necessary or any other alternatives
since we have small children and a dog.

Unfortunately, based on your description I am unable to determine the cause of the damage. I would suggest you take a sample to your County Extension (345-3283) for a definite identification of the pest and their suggestion as to how to control it, if in fact control is necessary. They should be able to provide you with "least toxic" information.
