Clematis requires a soil that is evenly moist but not soggy. It also prefers a cooler soil during hot weather. This can be achieved to some extent by shading the root area. Using an organic mulch such as shredded bark mulch will help provide those conditions as well as help feed the soil as it breaks down over time. Mulch is generally recommended for all of your garden plantings.
