My soil has a lot of clay. What can I do to get better drainage?

Add plenty of composted organic matter. In garden beds, you will need to add compost before every planting season--it's not a one-shot deal. Layer 4-6 inches on top of the soil and dig it in to a depth of 12-18 inches. Adding gypsum can also improve drainage, but again, it's a soil amendment that would need to be added yearly. On the positive side, clay soil retains water and nutrients longer!
