It is best to plant the peony now, if possible. It is possible to hold container grown plants over the summer for fall planting, but in general the plant would do better in the ground than in the container. At the grower's, container plants are produced under controlled conditions, with carefully monitored watering and fertilizing. It is very difficult to keep the plants equally healthy and vigorous in a container at home.
