The Q&A Archives: Overgrown Juniper Ground Cover

Question: How and do you prune back a blue rug juniper??? Have been in the ground for over 10 years without any proper care. They look terrible as they have outgrown their space. Need to know if there is a certain time a way to go about pruning these bushes.

Answer: You can try to prune it by removing individual branches one by one, but the results of a hard pruning may not be very attractive. These plants should be planted to allow for mature size or trimmed frequently. If you cut back into thicker wood, the plant may not regrow to cover the cut areas.
