This would depend on which vegetables in particular you are growing. However, most vegetables do well in a rich soil with a pH near neutral, a good amount of organic matter worked into it, and kept evenly moist yet not sopping wet. Routine use of an organic mulch will help moderate the soil temperature and keep it moist during the summer. It will also help feed the soil as it breaks down over time.
