When does one stop cutting the asparagus, so not to harm the plants and how about adding a fertilizer for the crop-- when and what type? |
How long you harvest asparagus depends on the maturity of your plants. In younger plants (3-5 years), it is safe to harvest for about a month. Older plants can be harvested longer. I fertilize my asparagus using well-diluted fish-based liquid fertilizer. I apply the fertilizer monthly from early spring through about June. |
I find that asparagus does well with several inches of rich compost layered on the bed and worked in a bit each spring. You can also use 5-10-10. Start harvesting in spring as spears emerge and stop 6-8 weeks later. |
