If your iris needs to be divided (usually after three to five years) it can be done in mid to late summer when the foliage has begun to flop over and yellow somewhat. Lift the rhizomes, trim the foliage by about half, and replant in a well drained location with good soil in full sun. Plant the rhizomes very shallow and do not mulch them.
