I have sandy soil here in the Coachella Valley, Thousand Palms, California. I am looking for low growing plants less than 4 to 5 feet tall that will grow well in our sandy soil. I'd prefer some with brightly colored flowers to attract birds and butterflies. I use a drip/spray system for watering, twice a day for 8 minutes.

Here are six to definitely consider:

Mexican bird of paradise, Caesalpinia mexicana
fairy duster, Calliandra eriophylla
Mexican honeysuckle, Justicia spicigera
Texas ranger, Leucophyllus frutescens
feathery cassia, Senna artemisioides
yellow bells, Tecoma stans

Good luck with your landscape!
