What kinds of flowers can you grow under a tree that has mostly shade?

Some annuals to consider would include impatiens, coleus, begonias, and caladium. Some easy perennials to consider would include hosta, ferns, pulmonaria, and astilbe. Sometimes a tree's roots will make it difficult to grow plants well beneath it. In that case you may want to use a large container such as a half barrel instead of planting in the ground.
