We would like to landscape for privacy and shade, with small trees and non-flowering vines around our deck. The deck is about 4 feet off the ground. Any suggestions for specific plants or good resources to look into. Thank you.

You might look at redbud trees, crabapple trees (some varieties hold their apples into the winter), or possibly the Japanese tree lilac (Syringa reticulata). You might also add some evergreens for winter interest along with some ornamental grasses for a textural contrast. A vine to consider would be Virginia creeper which turns bright red in the fall. Your County Extension might also have some good suggestions.
