The Q&A Archives: Separating Crocus Bulbs

Question: My crocus need separating this year. The foliage has died back, and I was told to dig them up and dry them in the basement until the fall. Should I separate them before I dry them or just before I plant them?

Answer: You can dig them up and they will probably separate themselves just as you handle them. You can dig them now or, if you can mark their locations, simply transplant them next fall. If you store them make sure they are in a dry location and check periodically for mold.
