The Q&A Archives: Caring for Water Lilies

Question: I recently bought some water lilies, but I have no idea how to take care of them. Would you please give me some suggestions? I live in zone 5; how should I winterize them?

Answer: Hardy water lilies can be left in their containers in the pond over the winter. Tropical lilies must be brought indoors, with the tubers packed in damp sand in a cool but not cold location. Storing the tropicals is an iffy process that does not always work, so be prepared to replace them each year.
