| After my daffodils bloom the remaining stems and leaves begin to droop and look messy. I have deadheaded the old blooms, but what do I do with the stems and leaves after the bloom season? Can I cut them down? How long do I need to leave them so they can get the nourishment they need for the winter? |
| The foliage is necessary for rebuilding the bulb's strength. It should be left in place to grow and mature and then fade and dry up naturally before you remove it. The longer it is left in place, the stronger the bulbs will be for better blooming performance next year. You could remove it when it is at least half way yellowed, but this causes a corresponding decrease in bulb vigor. The flowers on the other hand may be removed at any time. |
