I planted a calycanthus from bare root stock 2 years ago. It's doing fine but when can I expect it to flower? |
This is a plant that can sometimes take years before it blooms after tranpslanting, while some will bloom without interruption. It is a slow to medium speed grower in the best of circumstances, so patience seems to be the key as long as the plant seems to be healthy. It does prefer a deep moist loam so a drier soil could set it back a bit. Also note that it should be pruned only in spring right after the flowering season because it blooms on the previous year's growth. Pruning in the early spring would remove flower buds. Good luck with your sweetshrub -- it is worth the wait! |
