The Q&A Archives: Horsetail In Gardens

Question: How do I get rid of horsetail. It is taking over my gardens.

Answer: As you might have guessed, it will be difficult to eliminate horsetail. The plant has deep roots and spreads by underground rhizomes. Try to improve drainage--horsetail likes moisture. Keep the area mowed if possible. If you are growing a crop plant, keep the area properly fertilized to help the crop compete with the weeds. One source suggests planting a cover crop of nasturtiums--horsetail cannot endure shading and will be smothered by the dense foliage
