The Q&A Archives: Pruning A Harry Lauder Walking Stick

Question: Can you tell me if and when to prune a Harry Lauder Walking Stick? My tree has been in for two summers and really grew this past month. However the new shoots look tall and straight for the most part. There are a couple of contorted branches as well. Is this normal growth or should I prune it?

Answer: This shrub is grafted and occasionally the understock will send up a branch starting from below the graft. These straight growths should be pruned off as soon as they appear. If they are not removed, they may overwhelm the intended contorted branches.
