I planted several varieties of tomatoes in early June and while the plants are tall and are producing tons of tomatoes, they are staying green. Only 2 have ripened. Any ideas? |
Some varieties can naturally take a very long time to harvest, so in part that may explain the problem. However, lack of sun (tomatoes need full sun all day long for best results) and even excess shade created by very leafy unpruned vines can also cause delayed ripening. In the fall as the season cools you will also find that harvest times become slightly longer. If your vines are very overgrown you might try thinning some of the excess foliage and see if that helps. Next year you might look for varieties that ripen early in the season as well as late season varieties to try to extend the harvest period. |
