Can espailer fruit trees be planted in an area flat against a wall?

You can espalier fruit trees on walls, along fences, trellises or wires strung from one post to another. If you decide to train your fruit tree against a wall, try to provide some space between the branches and the wall, both for future growth of the branches, and to help promote good air circulation.
