Here are some annuals that can produce lovely flowers in spite of heat and drought: flannel flower (Actinotus helianthi), prickly poppy (Argemone grandiflora), cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), dwarf morning glory (Convolvulus tricolor), rocket larkspur (Consolida ambigua), annual coreopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria), painted spurge (Euphorbia cyathophora), rose-ring gaillardia (Gaillardia pulchella), globe amaranth (Gomphrena globosa), strawflower (Helichrysum bracteatum), sunflower (Helianthus annuus), four o'clock (Mirabilis jalapa), African daisy (Osteospermum ecklonis), gloriosa daisy (Rudbeckia hirta 'Gloriosa Daisy'), and common zinnia (Zinnia elegans).
