I am thinking of screening our backyard with bamboo. What varieties of bamboo are suitable for the harsh NY winters? The height of the bamboo should not also be that high (less than 10 feet). The yard has partial sunlight. Thanks a lot.

Unfortunately, I can't think of a bamboo that would suit your requirements. For exmaple, although some of the Phyllostachys types would be hardy they are just too aggressive and/or too tall for your location. They may also defoliate and look pretty rough or die back to the ground during a harsh winter. Instead, you might consider getting the look of bamboo with a bamboo fence and then grow a blooming or non-blooming vine on that for the foliage effect. Alternatively, an evergreen vine such as English ivy will make nearly any type of fence unobtrusive and would do well for you.
