The evergreen Magnolia grandiflora is reliably hardy through zone 7 and somewhat into zone 6 depending on your microclimate. A well established healthy tree will survive a colder spell more easily than a newly planted one, and exposure to wind can make a big difference to its odds of survival. An in-town location with plenty of reflected heat can also help. You might want to discuss your location with knowledgeable staff at local area nurseries and/or your county extension and see if they think it is worth a try for you or not.
