Stop fertilizing 6 weeks before the first frost and let spent flowers go to seed rather than cutting them off. This encourages the plant to go into dormancy. Then, bring container roses into an unheated garage or shed and put the pots in open cardboard boxes or other containers. Insulate the containers with straw, shredded newspaper or styrofoam packing peanuts to protect against temperature fluctuations.

I hope this info helps with your roses!
