| I am trying to find information on ornamental cabbage plants and can't seem to locate it. I really don't know if it is classed as a shrup or flowering plant, annual or perenial. Can you help? I want to know the planting conditions, etc. |
| The ornamental cabbage or kale is closely related to the vegetables we grow for food. They are annuals and will elongate and bloom and set seed once they mature. They are considered cool season plants because they do not tolerate heat. Hot weather will make them bolt or go to seed quickly. They continue growing larger as long as temperatures are above about 50 degrees, and will withstand cold into the 20's. Heavy snow and excessive cold will make them deteriorate, so consider them as short term bedding plants. They do best in an evenly moist, very rich garden soil in full sun. |
