| I want to plant a magnolia tree in February. I don't care which nursey it is purchased at I just want to be able to buy it that time of the year. I'm looking for a large saucer type flower pink to maroon in color. Would like for it to have a fragant smell if possible. The tree can grow up to 30 feet high and wide. I'm already preparing a hole for it and just want the opportunity to get on somewhere. What kind would you suggest, and where can I go to purchase it. I live 35 miles east of Salem, OR. Zone 6. | As long as the ground isn't frozen, you can plant a tree in February. Just be sure to provide water on a regular basis if rainfall is sparse. Saucer type magnolias are Magnolia x soulangeana. These are deciduous rather than evergreen trees. The cultivars with pink flowers include 'Alexandrina', 'Burgandy', 'M. lennei', 'Pink Supurba', ' Diva' and 'Rustica Rubra'. Of all the above, 'Diva' is the most fragrant. You may have to do a little shopping around by phone as nurseries do not always carry tree stock into February.
