The Q&A Archives: Lilac Bush

Question: Need information for replanting to bigger pot or to ground.
Size of pot? Kind of pot? Shade/sun requirement. Soil mixture?

Answer: Lilacs prefer soil on the alkaline side (8-8.5 on the pH scale). Gardening in a low-rainfall area of southern California, I suspect your soil pH is just about right for a lilac. The plants require full sunshine and good drainage. If you're transplanting into a larger pot, simply choose the next size pot for your plant. For instance, if it's in a 1-gallon pot, put it into a 1 1/2 or 2-gallon sized container. If replanting into a container, use any brand of potting soil. Unless your lilac is one of the Descanso hybrids, it may not flower well in your warm-winter region. Lilacs need a pronounced winter chill for best flowering. Best wishes with your lilac.
