The Q&A Archives: Lighting

Question: what is the correct distance that i should keep between my newly bought 400 watt metal halide lite and my seedlings, with out burning them orstarving lite from them. Thanx Dale

Answer: In my experience, ordinary fluorescent shop lights are adequate for seedlings, but if you want to try the halide lighting I would suggest setting the 400 watt bulb about one to two feet above the plants and watching to see how they respond and then adjust the height accordingly -- it should be somewhere within that approximate height range depending on what you are growing. (A stronger bulb, say 1000 watts, would definitely be more in the two foot plus range.) Fluorescents bulbs on the other hand are kept very close to the plants, just an inch or two above them. Have fun with your seedlings!
