The Q&A Archives: What Is A Possumhaw?

Question: I saw a Possumhaw in the Dec. issue of So. Living....a store sold me a Warren's Red Holly (Ilex decidua "Warren's Red") as a it??? Thank you for your help!!!

Answer: The name possum-haw can be Ilex decidua, Viburnum acerfolium or Viburnum nudun depending upon your gardening region. That's the problem with common names - they mean different things to different people. Since Ilex decidua is commonly called possum-haw, the nursery was correct. Best wishes with your new plant!
