I was wondering if you had any tips for establishing a new lawn with an irrigation system. I live in Arizona and currently the back yard is all dirt (used to be farm land). I am anxious to start the lawn however am unfamiliar with irrigating and starting a new lawn.

Thank you.

There are too many details for creating a healthy lawn in the desert that I recommend you read Desert Landscaping for Beginner's (ISBN 0-9651987-3-1) chapter on Turf and on Watering. It provides excellent, easy-to-understand information on preparing the soil, what type of grass to use, how to install it (seed, sod), maintain it, mow it, etc. The book is at the PHX library, nurseries and bookstores. Also, there is a free guide on irrigation systems put out by Arizona Municipal Water User's Association. It has info. on irrigation systems and some design tips for planting, but nothing on turf. Call your city water dept. to see if they have it available. Both of these publications are available at Maricopa County Cooperative Extension, 4341 E. Broadway Rd., PHX, 602-470-8086. Good luck!
