I just bought a nagami kumquat. Can it handle the full desert sun in Arizona if it's planted in the ground or is it better under a patio?

All citrus need full sun to fruit. However, in the low desert if you can keep it out of a western exposure, where it gets the hot afternoon sun in winter, that would be better.
