Please suggest shade loving perennials which will thrive in the southeastern United States. |
For spring bloom, try Wild Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), Dicentra (Bleeding Heart, Dutchman's Britches), various Epimedium species, Lenten Rose (Helleborus), Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum), Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium), Virginia Bluebells (Mertnsia virginica). Summer-bloomers include Monkshood (Aconitum), Astilbe, Bugbanes (Cimicifuga), Coral Bells (Heuchera), and Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis). Hosta and ferns come in a wide array of shapes and forms, and provide a wonderful backdrop for shade-loving blooms. Shade-loving bulbs that should be lifted and stored for winter include caladum and tuberous begonias. Burpee offers some of these - check out the "Plants for Shade" in their "Fall in the Garden" catalog. Enjoy! |
