What are the benefits of dumping coffee grinds right into the topsoil? I don’t have a compost bin where I know the coffee grinds would be a beneficial additive. Am I wasting my time?

Coffee grinds do contain some nutrients and so can be useful to plants. You could certainly compost them, or you could use them in small quantities scattered among the plants in the garden. Used in that manner they will still eventually break down and help feed the soil.
