Loropetalum chinense is the Razzleberri shrub. It's native to China and Japan. It has a compact growth habit (6'-10' high and wide), and produces drooping branches and roundish, light green, soft textured leaves. An occasional leaf turns yellow or red, providing a nice touch of color. It produces white to greenish flowers in clusters of four to eight at the branch tips during the spring. It will grow well in your central California gardening zone. Provide partial afternoon shade during the hottest summer months and plant in rich, well-draining soil. There are some varieties producing purple foliage and pink, but they're not as showy in the landscape. White flowers against green leaves provides more of a contrast than pink against purple. If you're interested in the purple-foliaged varieties, look for 'Burgundy', 'Fire Dance', 'Ruby' or 'Sizzlin Pink'.
