The Q&A Archives: Growing grapes in Thailand

Question: How do we grow grapes in the tropics?

Answer: I'm not sure you can grow grapes in Chiang Mai. I lived in Thailand as a Peace Corps volunteer in the 1980's and remember them growing strawberries in the hills around Chiang Mai, so there is a possibility that grapes may also be able to grow there. I would try growing the muscadine-type grapes. They are adapted to the heat in the southeastern, United States, so may grow better than the vinifer-types in Thailand. You can also try to contact the Peace Corps office in Bangkok. Perhaps a volunteer has tried such as project. I know we tried many different crops when I lived there. The website in the U.S. for muscadine grapes is listed below.

Good luck with your project. Sawadee Krab!
