| Lack of sunlight or poor pruning practices are the main causes of small flowers on rose bushes. Roses require at least 8 hours of direct sunshine each day. If yours isn't getting quite that much, bloom size will suffer. It's important to deadhead roses, so the plant's energy will be directed toward making new blooms rather than producing seed pods (rose hips). When you remove spent flowers, always cut the stem back to a 5-leaf leaflet to encourage development of new flowering shoots.
