The Q&A Archives: Fastest-growing Evergreens

Question: What is the fastest-growing tree that keeps its leaves/needles all year? We need a minimum 15-20 foot tall hedgerow to block out the view of our neighbor's 2-story house, which is right next to the property line, and we need it to grow fast (like by yesterday).

Answer: Some of the faster growing evergreen trees include Picea abies (Norway Spruce), Leptospermum (Tea Tree), and Lagunaria patersonii (Primrose Tree). Of these, you'd probably be happiest with the performance of Lagunaria. It's native to the South Pacific and Australia, fast growing, with a to 20'-50' mature height. It tolerates a wide variety of soils and growing conditions, resists wind and develops attractive blossoms in the summer. The trees are often planted in groups as a showy windbreak or screen.
