Peonies are among the easiest plants to grow. They are long lived and helathy established plants are known to survive in abandoned gardens. However, ideally, care would consist of the following. Each spring, remove any remaining dead and dried stems, being careful not to damage the emerging new growth tips. If you wish to stake them, install a peony ring or hoop early in the season while they are still short, this way they can grow up through the support and it will be hidden by bloom time. After blooming, trim off faded flowers. Late each fall, once the leaves have died and dried, trim off the now dead stems and remove them. Annually, in either late fall or early spring, apply either compost or a balanced granular fertilizer according to the label instructions. Enjoy! |
