The Q&A Archives: Sweetgum Life Span

Question: I would like to know what the average life span of an American sweetgum tree might be if propertly cared for. I am in Zone 9 (Houston).

Thanks very much.

Answer: In the wild, a lifespan of 150 years would not be unreasonable for Liquidambar styraciflua. Under urban street tree conditions, the lifespan might conceivably be as short as an average of seven years, depending on the growing conditions.
