Thornless honey locust is often suggested as a shade tree where there is room for a large tree. In some situations however a smaller tree is a better choice. For a sunny situation you might consider an ornamental cherry or one of the newer disease resistant crabapples. For a shady or partially shaded area, the redbud might be a good choice. Your local nursery should also be able to give you suggestions based on more specific information about your exact growing conditions such as soil type and moisture levels, exposure to wind, and so on.
