We have purchased 3 bottle brush bushes (dwarf size). We were told they would tolerate full sun. One plant is not doing well and now we are told by the same nursery that they should not be planted in the sun. What is your opinion?

Calliandra, called bottle brush, generally thrives in full sunshine. It's possible your new plants are just going through some stress from being transplanted. I suspect they will recover. In the meantime, water them thoroughly on a weekly basis and try to provide shade from the hot afternoon sun until they become established. A simple frame draped with burlap or weed block material should keep them comfy while they adjust to their new surroundings.
