The Q&A Archives: Heliotrope

Question: I understand heliotrope can be a perennial in our arid region. The nursery said to plant it in the shade. My plant book says in the sun. Your label was not specific.
Do you recommend planting it in the ground in the shade or would it do best as a potted plant?

Thank you

Answer: You can plant it in the ground or in a decorative pot. The plants are native to Peru and can take the heat in your gardening region, but not the hot afternoon sunshine. Plan to keep your Heliotrope in an area that gets afternoon shade and it will thrive.
