Sandy soil drains really quickly, which can benefit plant roots, but quick draining soil also means plants need to be watered and fertilized more often than those in a clayey soil. Some of the best candidates for a site such as you describe include Achillea (yarrow), Agapanthus (Lily-Of-The-Nile), Agave, Aloe, Amaryllis belladonna, Armeria maritima (thrift), Asclepias tuberosa (butterfly weed), Centaurea, Coreopsis, Erigeron (Mexican daisy), Iris, Linum, Narcissus, Oenothera (evening primrose), Pennisetum (fountain grass), Phormium, Salvia, Stachys byzantina (lamb's ears), Tithonia rotundifolia, Verbena and Zinna.
