When I was young we lived in Louisville, Kentucky and had a bamboo plant in our back yard. It had bamboo stalks, it grew in clums, and was not invasive. It would change colors with the seasons. Red, green, and yellow. It had leave like a maple tree and stalks like bamboo. It would die off in the winter. Then it would start all over again in the spring. Could you identify this bamboo plant for me.
If you have any other questions please let me know.

You didn't say whether or not the plant produced flowers, but based on your description of the stems and leaves, I think the plant is Persicaria, commonly called knotweed. The plants tend to form clumps like bamboo, and can grow from 2'-4' tall with an equal spread.
