Hello! We are looking for fast growing trees and or shrubs to give us backyard privacy. Our backyard and sideyards are open and facing back to back. Even with a fence, there is no privacy. We would like decidious but are open to suggestions. We live in Newberg. Thanks for your advice. Laurie

Keeping in mind that deciduous plants lose their leaves in the winter, you may want an evergreen plant for your privacy screen. Several are suitable, both broadleaf evergreen such as laurel, and needled evergreen such as arborvitae. Photinia is always a good choice. It's fast growing and the new leaves are red in spring, changing to green when mature. Other suggestions include Abelia, Leyland cypress, Holly, Myrica californica (Pacific wax myrtle), and Viburnum.
