An animal has decided to take up residence under the front step.

We tried throwing an old sock which had been soaked in ammonia under the step. The critter(s) hauled it outside the hole and moved back in.

Any suggestions please. Thank you.

Since it is right by your front step, for safety you will want to get this animal to move along. Many wild animals will become dangerously fierce when disturbed (especially if they have young with them) and may also carry pests and disease and so my first recommendation would be to call animal control or an animal removal professional to do the job for you.

Once this animal is gone, you will need to enclose the area under the steps to prevent another critter from taking advantage of that nice den space. The method you use would depend on the style of your house, but old fashioned wooden lattice or some wire mesh should do it. Attach it securely to the bulding and also run some wire mesh underground, reaching outward about a foot, to discourage tunneling.

Good luck, and be careful!
