| I planted hollyhock seeds last year. They grew and flourished, but no tall stalk with flowers. Will that happen this year? |
| Hollyhocks generally do not bloom until their second year so this would be normal. Most of the plants act like biennials, meaning grow year one, live through a winter, bloom year two, and die. Some of the plants may live longer (and occasionally plants started very early will bloom the first year) but there is no guarantee. For this reason you may want to either let some of the plants set seed and seed down, or you may want to add a few new plants each year to keep the "patch" going from year to year.
